  1.       Mission of the Department: 

Tigers Alive is the initiative of WWF established to support the global goal of doubling the number of wild tigers by 2022. At the heart of Tigers Alive is tiger population recovery. Efforts underway in all of the focal landscapes are aimed at providing the conditions for rapid recovery of tiger populations. This position is therefore a critical point of inspiration and leverage both internally within WWF but also externally where efforts are also slowly turning away from the defensive approach to conservation. 


Tigers Alive is an international WWF program working to ensure thriving, viable wild tiger populations in priority landscapes, to establish tiger conservation as a political priority and eliminate the trade in tiger parts and products. 


In 2018, WWF announced that a specific component of the Tigers Alive Strategy, the 50 tiger heartlands, is to be a WWF High Impact initiative, marking this component as one of the highest priorities in the WWF Network. The Heartlands strategy is about establishing effective management (measured against the CA|TS standards) to give every chance to these 50 sites to recover their tiger populations and to act as future sources of tigers for repopulating landscapes.

While the work of recovery is very site focused, this position will also lead the networks contribution to landscape and global tiger recovery. This position therefore requires an understanding of tiger ecology, population recovery and conservation and will build good working relationships within WWF and externally with partners focused on tiger recovery. 


  1. Major Functions:   

As a Tigers Alive technical lead, this position contributes to Phase 3 of the Tigers Alive Strategic Plan 2017 – 2020, and specifically the functions under Outcome 1: Securing Connected Landscapes, and Outcome 3: Putting People at the center of tiger conservation. The role is specifically responsible for leading and delivery of People Centered Tiger Conservation. The position utilizes leadership without direct authority and develops a network of high potential contributors to achieve both Workstreams


  1. Key Accountabilities: 

·        Working closely with Habitats and Conflict Lead, Tigers Alive, to design, plan and co-lead facilitation of a Tiger Range Communities’ Technical Workshop by June 2020.

·       Working closely with identified communities focal points in key tiger range countries to review, and refine a People Centered Tiger Conservation concept, and develop a plan for rolling it out in 2020 and beyond.

·       Working closely with the Impact Manager and the Habitats and Conflict Lead - Tigers Alive.

·       Identifying large global funding opportunities (e.g. funds directed towards communities, indigenous peoples, sustainable development, or climate outcomes, as well those tied to impact investment, offset markets, green bonds or other similar approaches). Such opportunities will necessarily support tiger habitat protection linked to our tiger community work, with the goal of securing one large fund for each of Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia (with input from the focal points in each of those offices).

·       Working closely with the TAI team and WWF Network to coordinate travel in advance of visits to Tiger Range Countries and their community-conservation landscapes.

·       Working closely with the TAI team to support work that crosses over with the communities program.

·       Bringing leadership and innovation to the development of country and landscape strategies that see people/local communities assume a role as key partners at the center of tiger conservation.

·       Lead the development, refinement and roll-out of a People Centered Tiger Conservation approach and piloting of the social carrying capacity mechanism as part of the approach. 

·       Provide expert technical in the development of incentive frameworks for corporate, smallholder, and commodities sector actors, across multiple tiger landscapes, as a means to facilitate their roles in developing support for tiger recovery and maintain or expand space for tigers into the future.

·       Provide expert advice and support to members of the Tigers Alive team, including (primarily) the Habitats and Conflicts Lead and (secondarily) the Policy Lead, in order for the better deliver of all Workstreams under Outcome 1 and Outcome 3 of Tigers Alive Strategy (Outcome 1: Securing Connected Landscapes: Obj 1: Secure a network of critical sites; Obj 2: Secure connected landscapes; Outcome3 : Putting People at the center of tiger conservation: Obj 1: Manage Human Wildlife Conflict; Obj 2: Gain support from communities and businesses).

·       Provide expert input into Tigers Alive discussions and strategic direction, particularly during annual planning.

  • Serve as the Tigers Alive focal point and thought leader for the network on adopting, trialing and implementing innovative approaches to community centered tiger recovery.
  • Represent the wider WWF Network as a subject-matter expert on community-centered conservation as requested, be this through participation or presentations at relevant conferences or meetings, or through media engagement or written pieces.
  • Co-create rich conservation content to engage WWF audiences and mobilise support.
  • Find efficient ways of capturing community needs and analyzing the potential for mutually beneficial arrangements between conservationists and community members living in tiger landscapes.
  • Assist WWF Network offices operating in tiger range countries to bring current thinking and new approaches to their work to modernize and improve their community programs as required.

  • A working relationship with community focal points in tiger landscapes and their teams, characterized by frequent and ongoing communication.
  • Linking with and between staff across the WWF Network to advance the goals of this position.

  • Working with and supporting or improving relevant technical hubs and Working Groups.

Promoting tiger landscapes across WWF network for funding and technical support to ensure gaps are filled.

  1. Profile:

Required Qualifications 

  • Post graduate degree in a field relevant to the position (biological sciences, conservation, economics, development, etc.) combined with professional experience in the field of biological/natureconservation.



Required Skills and Competencies 

·       Extensive experience working in international nature conservation, development or community development fields

·       Specialized skill, knowledge and experience in the areas of conservation theory/practice, conservation landscapes, and the integration of conservation and development, economic and social sustainability mechanisms.

·       Proven experience developing and coordinating conservation programs and projects, including those delivered through multiple partners, across different disciplines and cultural backgrounds.

·       Demonstrated evidence of being informed and up to date with current best practice and recent developments in matters pertaining communities and conservation.

·       Experience working at the village and remote rural community level

·       Demonstrated ability to innovate and adapt new ideas to existing work

·       Excellent written and verbal English skills with the proven ability in translating technical and academic information so as to be understood by non-technical audiences.

·       Cross-cultural skills and a track record of working in diverse geographies.

·       Proven diplomacy skills, including interpersonal and communication skills, and the demonstrated ability to work in a team as well as independently
