Position title:  Senior Legal Counsel

Reports to:      Director of Operations

 

  1. About World Wildlife Fund for Nature, Singapore (WWF Singapore):

WWF Singapore is a Singapore-registered charity, founded by WWF International  -  the global conservation organization. WWF Singapore works with corporate partners in Singapore for best practices in natural resource management, engages in communications and outreach to raise awareness of critical environmental issues and collaborates with WWF offices in the region to raise funds for important conservation programmes. The WWF Singapore office also provides a hub for regional staff of WWF and supports WWF's operational functions. It works with government, business, other NGOs and the local Singapore community to spearhead efforts to build the region’s expertise in planning and managing natural resources wisely.

 

  1. Profile

We are looking for an experienced professional with sound understanding of contract law and good judgement on potential risks and liabilities to safeguard our organisation. Collaborative collegial style with great eye for detail and always seeking full understanding of what the organisation tries to achieve.

 

  1. Major Duties & Responsibilities:

Legal

  • Work with, and provide advice to the Director of Operations and the management team on legal issues, and in particular, on laws relating to charities, contract law, company law, intellectual property, personal data protection, security and on employment disputes.

  • Work with key stakeholders and counterparties to draft, review and negotiate agreements, including licenses and partnerships

  • Support the development and review of organisational policies and procedures (including matters related to the functioning of the company’s board of directors) from an ethics, governance and legal standpoint

  • Develop and maintain a database of templates.

  • Advise management on contentious matters with legal ramifications.

  • Advise teams on legal risks on the projects undertaken

  • Manage the exposure of WWF Singapore to potential legal risks

  • Cooperate with the WWF Secretariat for Network matters and trademark matters.

  • Perform any other duties from time to time at the request of Director of Ops & Projects.

  • Provide advice and training on legal and compliance matters in relation to the management and operations of the Company.

  • Provide advice on the scope and application of regulations with respect to the activities of the Company.

  • Manage the relationship with external legal service providers and to advise on their engagement as required.​

  • Support management to monitor compliance for the organisation, assist in developing compliance policies, support the development of relevant training material, and conduct compliance training to staff members so as to create awareness on risks and compliance, and to embed the right behaviours. Maintain close collaboration with the compliance community within the Network.

 

  1. Required Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

  • A law degree with at least 4 years of relevant work experience. Candidate should highlight any corporate secretarial and/or in-house counsel experience

  • Relevant experience and/or knowledge relating to charities will be an added advantage

  • Good ability in managing multiple stakeholders in a complex dynamic matrix structure

  • Adaptable, meticulous and able to work independently

  • Excellent written and spoken English

  • Ability to analyse complex legal issues

  • Demonstrate commercial mindset as well as the ability to appropriately manage and mitigate compliance risk

  • Strong verbal & written communication skills with a high ability to influence and negotiate in an effective way

  • Good working ability with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, Powerpoint) is essential
