Unlock the secrets of Singapore’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in this trail for biodiversity.

We share our planet with millions of different species. This huge variety of plants, animals, insects and the places they live is called biodiversity. And together, they provide us with essentials like food, drinking water, clean air, medicines and shelter.

In the past 40 years, wildlife has declined drastically by 60% and is expected to drop further to 67% by 2020. The loss of forests contributes to rising temperatures and this in turn adds to climate change, increasing the impact of natural disasters. Habitat destruction and over-exploitation of resources are primary causes of this biodiversity loss. This is especially concerning for a globalized country like Singapore that imports 90% of its food, among other commodities. Healthy ecosystems and rich biodiversity can help mitigate the impact of climate change and we owe it to our future generations to safeguard our planet.

MSIG Insurance seeks to go beyond their core purpose of protecting the things that people hold dear. In its mission to secure a sound future for the planet, the general insurer recognizes the importance of biodiversity and aims to play a part in raising awareness about protecting biodiversity for a sustainable future. In collaboration with WWF Singapore, MSIG has spearheaded an educational project for the public to learn more about biodiversity through an interactive and engaging trail, set within Singapore’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site - the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The MSIG Biodiversity Trail is the result of this collaborative effort.

Through the District Race mobile app, the MSIG Biodiversity Trail allows the public to explore the Singapore Botanic Gardens while staying active and healthy! With strategically-placed checkpoints and challenges within the grid, participants can learn and pick up interesting facts about local biodiversity. For instance, did you know that the Singapore Botanic Gardens once had jungles described as “a haunt of tigers”, and that it houses the critically endangered Johore fig tree?

We hope this free and easy to explore biodiversity trail will inspire more of you to play a part by connecting to nature, taking more care of our natural environment and consuming resources responsibly.

To enjoy the trail, follow these simple steps -
