This year’s standout participation was made possible by support from communities, business associations and individuals
SINGAPORE, 30 MARCH 2022 – On Saturday, 26 March 2022, a record-breaking 1,000 establishments, communities and organisations in Singapore marked Earth Hour 2022 and participated in the iconic lights switch-off at 8.30 p.m. to show their support for protecting the planet. This year, the annual grassroots movement for nature by WWF-Singapore (World Wide Fund for Nature Singapore) surpassed last year’s record of 744 participating establishments.
In addition, WWF-Singapore’s ‘Kosong Plan’ pledges towards personal Net Zero commitments have doubled since its launch last year, highlighting Singaporeans’ commitment to tackle climate change and building a Net Zero future together.
The Hour
On 26 March 2022, WWF-Singapore’s Earth Hour switch off came to life at 8.30 pm local time. In a stunning display of the nation’s united resolve for nature, Singapore and its iconic skyline went dark as hundreds of landmarks, buildings, residences and individuals islandwide made a stand for climate action and switched off their lights for this global movement.

Communities for our planet
This year’s Earth Hour also saw strong and positive participation from local communities. West Coast Grassroots Organisations engaged their residents on environmental topics ranging from food sustainability to green investments, with a month-long line-up of activities that led up to its Facebook Livestream on Saturday to mark Earth Hour.
Throughout the day, Marymount Community Club posted climate awareness videos produced by the schools in the community and Earth Society on their Facebook page focusing on nature loss, climate change and useful tips on sustainability.
“We are pleased to collaborate with WWF-Singapore on the Earth Hour campaign this year. It is extremely crucial to get the message out there on the effects of climate change. At Pioneer, we promoted awareness among the residents to take part in this meaningful movement. We also switched off non-essential lights at The Frontier Community Club as a mark of our commitment to be accountable for our ecological footprint,” said Patrick Tay, Member of Parliament from Pioneer Constituency.

BEYOND THE HOUR: Date with Nature
On Earth Hour day, WWF-Singapore invited the public to reconnect with the planet and enjoy a #DatewithNature at local park connectors and national gardens such as Gardens by the Bay.
The public was also encouraged to capture these moments on their social media, using the hashtag #DateWithNature and tagging WWF-Singapore, to encapsulate the day with beautiful images of nature around the nation.

BEYOND THE HOUR: WWF-Singapore’s ‘Kosong Plan’
Individuals can continue to take a stand for the environment by making small, actionable changes in their daily lives with WWF-Singapore’s Kosong Plan.
The number of pledges has doubled from just over 1,000 at Earth Hour last year, to 2433 as of this Earth Hour. WWF-Singapore hopes to have more Singaporeans brew their own Kosong Plan at earthhour.sg/kosongplan and achieve their personal Net Zero goals with simple sustainable changes.
The pledges include simple yet important lifestyle choices, such as eating more responsibly by eating less meat and choosing more ‘planet-based’ options or travel more responsibly by taking public transport or walking whenever possible, etc.
Throughout the year, pledgers can also look forward to regular and practical tips from WWF-Singapore on how to increase their climate commitments and achieve their Kosong Plan goals. By nurturing individual awareness and conscious actions for the environment, the Kosong Plan aims to help all stakeholders to develop a low carbon, climate-resilient nation and help Singapore meet its Net Zero goals.
