Executive, Global Palm Oil
Global Palm Oil
Details

Position title:               Executive, Global Palm Oil

Reports to:                   Global Palm Oil Lead

About World Wide Fund for Nature, Singapore (WWF)

WWF-Singapore is a Singapore-registered charity, a network member of WWF International – one of the world’s largest and most respected independent conservation organisations. WWF-Singapore protects critical resources for people in Singapore by driving change across government, business, civil society and local communities. To meet key conservation goals, we address issues such as deforestation, haze pollution, seafood sustainability and illegal wildlife trade in Singapore and around the region. We deliver transformational corporate partnerships, fundraising to execute local and global conservation programmes and projects and community outreach to achieve WWF’s global goals for food, forests, oceans, water, wildlife, and climate and energy. As one of WWF’s global hubs, WWF-Singapore supports a global network that spans over 100 countries.

WWF’s vision is a future where all palm oil is produced without causing deforestation, the conversion of natural ecosystems, environmental degradation or the harming wildlife. It should also be produced in a manner which treats workers fairly, respects the rights of local communities and indigenous people, and incentivises and empowers producers including smallholder farmers with the means to adopt more responsible production practices as a part of sustainable livelihoods. Where palm oil is produced, the wellbeing of people, wildlife, and habitats should be protected and enhanced at a landscape level, and negative impacts should be mitigated and not displaced elsewhere.

WWF’s goals for palm oil are to:

  • Protect: Palm oil driven deforestation and natural habitat conversion are halted across all production landscapes.
  • Produce: Sustainable palm oil production is incentivised and no longer contributes to climate change and ecosystem degradation. The industry provides sustainable livelihoods, reduces poverty, and respects human rights.
  • Restore: Landscapes are restored and enhance biodiversity conservation through the restoration of degraded ecosystems – including forests, peatlands, and existing plantations – and the reconnection of fragmented habitats and species populations by establishing wildlife corridors.

I.        Major Functions:

Working closely with the Global Palm Oil team, the incumbent will help to implement and support projects and activities to accelerate demand for more sustainable and responsibly produced palm oil, with a focus on Asia. This includes working with WWF offices around the world and contributing to interventions that promote sustainable production, trade and consumption of palm oil.

  • Coordinate the team’s administrative & finance processes (budget forecast, invoices, travel requests, calendar/room bookings, etc)
  • Undertake other appropriate tasks as assigned by the Supervisor

We achieve this through community-based conservation and restoration efforts in key landscapes and seascapes, and by innovative approaches for market transformation, sustainable finance, policy and advocacy, and education and outreach.

Mission of the Asia Sustainable Finance Team:

WWF has identified the finance sector as a key driver of global economic activity with which we must engage to successfully deliver on our long-term conservation mission. To do this, we work with key finance sector players including banks, investors, regulators, and stock exchanges, across six focus areas:

  1. Regulations and Guidelines: We provide recommendations and facilitate dialogue between regulatory authorities and financial institutions (FIs) to issue harmonized regulations and guidelines that raise the bar for sustainable finance at the national and regional level.

  • Capacity Building: We empower FIs through capacity building on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues through industry-wide workshops and bilateral training sessions. Our training covers a range of sectors and thematic focus areas and helps FIs to better assess and price risk, value companies, and develop new products.
  • Research & Tools: We conduct research, develop best practice guides, and benchmark FIs’ progress on ESG integration to ensure timely progress towards a resilient and sustainable financial system. We also help FIs to understand and implement cutting-edge tools so they can better understand, measure, and manage evolving ESG risks and opportunities.
  • Engagement: We help investors exert their influence and facilitate large scale, meaningful change by providing research and analysis that supports their engagement with portfolio companies over key ESG issues.
  • Green Financial Solutions: We work with FIs to support the development of innovative green financial solutions based on science-based criteria that create measurable environmental and social impacts alongside competitive financial returns.

In Asia, we work across seven (7) ASEAN countries - Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam – as well as in Japan and South Korea. AVP / VP, Greening Financial Regulation initiative (GFRi) – Asia Pacific Regional & Technical
Sustainable Finance
Details

Position title:  AVP / VP, Greening Financial Regulation initiative (GFRi) – Asia Pacific Regional & Technical

Reports to: Head, Asia Sustainable Finance, WWF-Singapore

I. Mission of the WWF Sustainable Finance Team

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is one of the world’s largest and most experienced conservation organizations with a global network of 6000 experts working across the areas most critical to global sustainable development, including food systems, climate and energy, and freshwater, forests and oceans, active in more than 100 countries.

Our approach is deeply rooted in science and our mission is to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which people and nature thrive. WWF has identified the finance sector as a key driver of global economic activity with which we must engage to successfully deliver on our long-term conservation mission.

Positioned at the cutting-edge of sustainable finance internationally, our global sustainable finance team of 80 experts - including 30 in Asia - is dedicated to supporting the finance sector to transition to sustainable and resilient economy via working  key finance sector players including banks, investors, regulators, and stock exchanges, across six focus areas: standards, regulations, capacity building, research & tools, green financial solutions and engagement.

II.  Objectives of WWF’s Greening Financial Regulation initiative

Influencing financial market regulations is one of the most efficient levers to shift financial flows in line with international agreements such as the Paris Agreement on climate change and with broader sustainable development goals. In 2021, WWF launched the Greening Financial Regulation initiative (GFRi), a new network-wide initiative to advocate for a more systematic integration of climate-related and environmental risks in financial regulation and supervision, as well as in monetary policy.

This is done notably by measuring and tracking progress made by central banks and financial supervisors, and by providing targeted support and capacity building to these institutions. To do so, WWF leverages existing data, tools and methodologies, conducts and publishes relevant research together with external partners. More information here.

The GFRi is a global initiative, led by WWF-Switzerland with support from regional and technical leads. WWF-Singapore is currently looking for a GFRi Asia Pacific Regional & Technical AVP/VP to work together with the GRFi APAC Technical Lead to coordinate work in the region, as well as to lead the development and implementation of the Sustainable Financial Regulations and Central Bank Activities (‘SUSREG’) Tracker. More information here.

III. Key responsibilities

GFRi – Asia Pacific Regional AVP/VP
