Many marine creatures are vulnerable to extinction, and there is a global effort to research and better protect them. Knowledge of the critical habitats of these animals (e.g. for feeding, breeding, nurseries, resting), is especially important for informing which areas should be managed and protected. However, there remains a paucity of such information and research in Southeast Asia.
As a city in nature, Singapore presents a unique opportunity to study how marine creatures (such as sharks and other species of fish) cope in an urbanised and modified marine environment. Sentosa island offers a unique opportunity to study if these animals can thrive around an island substantially modified for tourism and other recreational uses. A more rigorous scientific assessment of the species found around Sentosa Island and the Southern Islands will allow for informed conservation planning and provide materials for outreach and education.
ONE°15 Marina has joined hands in support of WWF and local researchers in this landmark opportunity to spearhead this study here in Singapore
The project also aligns with ONE°15’s flagship marina, ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove, values and strengthens its position as the finest, eco-friendly “Fish-friendly Marina”. The partnership hopes to achieve the following objectives:-
