Intern, Carbon Finance and Markets

Position title: Intern, Carbon Finance and Markets

Duration: 3 months

Location: Singapore

About WWF-Singapore

WWF-Singapore World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is one of the world’s largest and most respected independent conservation organisations. WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of the earth’s natural environment and building a future in which humans live in harmony with nature. As one of WWF’s international hubs, WWF-Singapore supports a global network spanning over 100 countries. WWF Singapore works closely with local stakeholders towards a greener and more sustainable Singapore and the region around us. We work to address key conservation areas, such as climate change, sustainable finance, deforestation, illegal wildlife trade, marine conservation, and sustainable production and consumption, through collaboration, education and outreach efforts involving the community, businesses, and governments. For more information, please visit wwf.sg.

As the Intern, Carbon Finance and Markets, you will support the design, coordination and implementation of WWF-Singapore’s programmatic work on carbon markets, both voluntary and compliance-based. This position requires an understanding of carbon finance mechanisms, market dynamics, standards and policy frameworks, and nature-based solutions.

Role Overview

The Intern, Carbon Finance and Markets will support WWF‑Singapore’s work on carbon markets and nature finance, with a strong emphasis on research, ecosystem mapping, and market analysis.

The role spans multiple strategic workstreams, including WWF’s Canopy Programme, nature‑positive agriculture in ASEAN, and targeted support to organisational priorities such as WWF‑Singapore’s 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner.

The internship is well‑suited for candidates interested in nature‑based solutions, blue carbon, sustainable agriculture, and finance mechanisms that support climate and nature outcomes. This position requires an understanding of carbon finance mechanisms, market dynamics, standards and policy frameworks, and nature-based solutions.

Key Workstreams & Responsibilities

1. Canopy Programme – Nature & Blue Carbon Ecosystem Mapping

  • Map existing funds, financial mechanisms, and initiatives related to nature‑based solutions and blue carbon (e.g. mangroves, seagrasses, tidal wetlands), with a focus on ASEAN and relevant global platforms.
  • Analyse how existing mechanisms complement, overlap with, or leave gaps relative to the objectives of the Canopy Programme.
  • Develop structured ecosystem maps, fund landscaping outputs, and briefing materials to support internal strategy development and partner engagement.

2. Nature‑Positive Agriculture – ASEAN Intervention & Finance Mapping

  • Support the mapping of nature‑positive and regenerative agriculture interventions across ASEAN, including initiatives by NGOs, development partners, donors, corporates, and impact investors.
  • Develop an overview of who is doing what, where, and at what scale, across priority crops and landscapes.
  • Identify key gaps, inefficiencies, and market failures (e.g. lack of early‑stage risk capital, fragmented farmer aggregation, weak demand signals, or MRV challenges).
  • Analyse the funding ecosystem for sustainable and nature‑positive agriculture, including public, philanthropic, and private/impact finance.
  • Support identification of potential leverage points for blended finance or programmatic investment approaches.

3. WWF Singapore 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner (Support)

  • Provide ad hoc research and coordination support related to WWF‑Singapore’s 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner.
  • Support background research, briefing notes, or presentation materials, particularly where linked to carbon markets, nature finance, and impact storytelling.
  • Assist with general preparatory and coordination tasks in the lead‑up to the event, as required.
  • Note: Event-related support will primarily focus on content and preparation rather than operations or logistics.

Key Outputs

Depending on workstream needs, outputs may include:

  • Ecosystem and fund mapping matrices (e.g. spreadsheets or structured databases)
  • Market and finance landscape summaries
  • Slide decks and visual synthesis materials
  • Short analytical notes on gaps, risks, and financing opportunities
  • Inputs to concept notes, proposals, and partner briefings

Skills and Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Master’s or advanced undergraduate program in environmental science, economics, policy, climate studies, sustainable finance, or related field.
  • Strong research and writing skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information clearly.
  • Foundational knowledge of carbon markets, climate policy, nature‑based solutions, or sustainable finance; familiarity with global climate frameworks (e.g. the Paris Agreement) is an advantage.
  • Self‑starter with strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written); additional languages are a plus.

Additional advantages (not required):

  • Experience with data analysis, policy research, or sustainability‑related research
  • Familiarity with ASEAN context
  • Previous internship or volunteer experience in the environmental, development, or non‑profit sector

Experience with tools such as Excel, PowerPoint, or data visualisation platforms esearch, strategy, and sustainable market design—all while supporting a mission-driven organization working to protect nature and the planet.

This job description covers the main tasks. Other tasks may be assigned as necessary according to organisational needs.

We may also disclose personal data about you to our affiliates in the network in order to manage our relationship with you.

Interested candidates are required to submit their cover letter and resume to the HR Department of WWF-Singapore (Email: hr@wwf.sg). Please indicate the position being applied for ‘Intern, Carbon Finance and Markets’ in the subject line and also complete the questionnaire from this link .
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Thank you for your understanding
