Carbon Finance

WHY IT MATTERS

Nature offers some of the most immediate and scalable solutions to the climate crisis. Forests, mangroves and coastal wetlands remove and store vast amounts of carbon, protect communities from floods and storms, and sustain the biodiversity that underpins our food systems and livelihoods.

Yet these ecosystems are disappearing and the capital needed to protect and restore them is not flowing at the scale or speed required.

Carbon finance, when built on strong environmental and social safeguards, is one way to close this gap. By connecting capital with high-integrity nature-based projects, we can deliver climate, biodiversity and social outcomes together

Read WWF’s Network Position on Carbon Finance.

WWF-Singapore’s carbon finance workstream contributes to the global goal of mobilising USD 1 trillion for nature and climate action by developing high-integrity carbon projects that redirect private capital into conservation at scale.

HOW WWF IS TAKING ACTION

WWF-Singapore is scaling high-integrity carbon projects across Southeast Asia, expanding the supply of credible projects while strengthening the systems that support them.

  • Financing nature through carbon finance
We channel capital into WWF’s priority landscapes and seascapes, including blue carbon landscapes such as the Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape
  • Strengthening integrity
We support the development of policy, standards and technology innovations to ensure carbon markets function with credibility → Read WWF’s Network Carbon Position Here
  • Building investable pipelines
We work with local WWF offices and project developers to originate and develop high-quality, investment-ready projects across Southeast Asia
  • We work with partners to align incentives, co-create solutions and scale what works

Financing nature through carbon finance

Carbon finance channels private capital directly into WWF’s priority landscapes and seascapes, including blue carbon landscapes such as the Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape.

Strengthening integrity

Policy development, standards-setting and technology innovation keep carbon markets credible and functioning at the highest level of integrity

Connecting partners to scale impact

Partners align incentives, co-create solutions and scale what works — multiplying impact across the region.

WWF is a founding member of the SCeNe Coalition, an alliance of NGOs working to catalyse nature-based solutions across Southeast Asia by aligning partners, strengthening standards and accelerating investment.

APPROACH

At WWF-Singapore, supporting Singapore’s net-zero carbon emissions target is a top priority through collaboration with policymakers, businesses, communities, and individuals.

BEHAVIOURAL TRANSFORMATION FOR OUR PLANET

Earth Hour, WWF’s iconic annual event held in March, will continue to pave the way for global efforts against climate change and signify unity in dedicating ourselves to reducing our carbon emissions. Excitingly, WWF-Singapore has plans to extend the conversation about positive action for our planet beyond the hour-long event. Watch this space!

We are expanding Earth Hour into a movement in Singapore that highlights the urgency of climate action and inspires communities to enable individual change and adopt sustainable lifestyle practices.

Earth Hour 2023 will be a six-month campaign aimed at galvanising collective action by organisations and individuals. The campaign will inspire climate action in the community and work toward driving Singapore to reduce carbon emissions.

Transformation towards Nature-based Solutions

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) involve harnessing the power of nature and its ecosystem services to address societal environmental challenges, such as climate change, food and water security, extreme weather events and human health. These are achieved through protecting, restoring or managing natural ecosystems, hence providing benefits for both human well-being and biodiversity.

Forest conservation and restoration are one of the best examples of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) that can provide solutions for societal challenges, such as reducing people’s vulnerability to climate change impact and building their resilience to it. For example, planting trees in our mangrove areas not only provides a habitat for various fish, bird and plant species to thrive, it also safeguards human lives by reducing the impact of storms on our coasts.

WWF-Singapore aims to develop high-quality nature-based interventions for climate mitigation in Southeast Asia and provide corporate guidance on Nature-based Solutions investment (NbS).

In recognition of the increasing interest in NbS and the associated opportunities and risks in financing NbS, WWF-Singapore joined forces with seven other globally recognised environmental and conservation nonprofits, to establish the Southeast Asia Climate and Nature Based Solutions Coalition (SCeNe Coalition). The Coalition aims to develop high-quality, ‘triple benefit’ Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for Climate in Southeast Asia to mitigate climate change, conserve nature, and benefit local communities and indigenous peoples.

Business Transformation for Climate

Nearly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions can be traced to energy generation, and half of that energy is used by industrial or commercial entities.

WWF-Singapore is engaging with businesses to broaden corporate participation and take action on climate change throughout their supply chain. Our work with companies starts from supporting them on the sustainability journey and committing to take climate action. We eventually help them align with a 1.5°C world by achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

We will bring the expertise from our global network on topics like the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), best energy practices, carbon markets and clean cooling to help companies become the stewards of the green transition that is already swiftly unfolding in Asia.

Together, we can demonstrate that climate action is vital, achievable, practical and compatible with corporate growth.

OUR PROGRAMMES

At WWF-Singapore, we act as a catalyst to drive change and collective transformative actions. We contribute to the net zero vision by collaboratively working with policymakers, businesses, communities, and individuals, as well as with the WWF network expertise, together.

We’re taking a three-pronged transformative approach that focuses on climate, nature, and people.

CANOPY NATURE FINANCE FACILITY

A blended finance facility that mobilises capital into nature-based carbon projects across Southeast Asia – starting with mangroves and adjacent blue carbon ecosystems. Canopy addresses the most critical funding gap: early-stage project development, where risk is highest and capital is scarce.

BLUE CARBON SUPPORT PROGRAMME (BCSP)

An innovation platform to overcome the technical and implementation barriers holding back blue carbon projects at scale. By advancing technology, data and on-the-ground solutions, the programme enables more projects to reach the quality and credibility required for carbon finance.
