All About corals

Objectives

  • Understand ocean biodiversity and the threats they experience
  • Research based workshop, exploring the impact of light on coral growth.
  • Convey importance of coral and ocean ecosystems to the school population


Format

  • Five sessions. Session duration varies between 1 to 1.5 hours


Target Audience

  • Primary and Secondary School (10 to 17 years old)

Session Outline

  • Workshop 1 (1 hour)
    • Introduction to project and getting to know the committee
    • Introduction to corals and their environment
  • Workshop 2 (1 hour)
    • Introduction to the scientific method and what is an experiment
  • Workshop 3 (1.5 hours)
    • Setting up your coral aquarium for experimentation and getting to know the methodology
  • Workshop 4 (30 minutes)
    • How to communicate your project
  • Workshop 5 (1 hour) (1.5 – 2 months after Workshop 3)
    • Data evaluation and project wrap up
 
All participating schools will be provided with a saltwater tank with corals at no cost. Schools are responsible for the management of the saltwater tanks. Schools can decide to keep the saltwater tank and corals after the project is completed.
