[PILOT] wetland immersion

Objectives:

  • Raise awareness and appreciation on the importance of wetland habitats 
  • Explore different conditions to facilitate growth of mangrove propagules 
  • Gain exposure on regional ecosystems through virtual exchange with our sister wetlands at Mai Po Nature Reserve
  • Six sessions via in-person or virtual. Session duration varies between 1.5 hours to 2 hours.

 

Project Format:

  • Only open to 3 schools (Shortlisted schools will be notified)
 
Target Audience:
  • Secondary School (Grade 7 and higher for International School)

 

Project Outline:

  • Workshop 1 (1.5 hours)
    • Introduction to Wetlands: learn about plant species and features, zonation, animals, importance of mangroves to urban cities like Singapore
  • Workshop 2 (2 hours)
    • Wetlands Exploration at Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve (Practical)
  • Workshop 3 (1.5 hours)
    • Introduction to research methods and how to design an experiment
    • Experimental setup to study optimum conditions for growth of mangrove propugules
  • Workshop 4 (1.5 hours)
    • Learn to analyse results and data collected
    • Learn different ways to conduct outreach activities in school & community
    • Preparation for virtual exchange session with students from HongKong
    • Learn how to communicate and present about project with peers
  • Workshop 5 (1.5 hours)
    • Virtual Exchange
  • Workshop 6 (2 hours)
    • Outreach to school and/or community (deliverable)
    • Project Wrap Up
 
*Note: Schools may have the opportunity to participate in an overseas visit (in upcoming rounds), subject to confirmation
