ShellBank
WWF and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have successfully developed a methodology to extract DNA from turtle shells. The technology will enable WWF and partners to create a genetic database for hawksbill turtles and products that allows enforcement officers in Singapore and throughout Asia Pacific to track the flow of illegal turtle products from “sale to source” and direct interventions towards poaching, transit and sale hotspots.
SEEShell App:
Distinguishing real from faux turtle shellproducts through patterns, colour and textureof the shell can be very difficult, even for experts. To meet this challenge, WWF is collaborating with SEE Turtles to utilise artificial intelligence in a first of its kind smartphone application to help law enforcement, companies and the public determine real from faux products.
